Rules regarding guide dogs and assistance dogs

Animals are prohibited within the Royal Dalhousie; however:

Guide dogs and assistance dogs are the only animals recognized by the Quebec courts* as a means to address a disability. Therefore, only these animals are accepted in our establishment, and appropriate evidence must be presented during check-in to allow their entry.

*Emotional support animals that have not received training are not recognized by the courts as a means to address a person's disability in public places.

Requirements for Guide Dogs and Assistance Dogs:

  • The individual must be able to provide proof of the dog's training/certification.
  • The dog must wear a visual identification element.

Requirements for Emotional Support Dogs:

  • The individual must provide documentation from a professional certifying:
    • The person's need (due to a disability, medical condition, or mental health condition).
    • The usefulness of the animal to address this need.

In addition:

  • The presence of an animal during a stay must be communicated to us at the time of booking, as only a few rooms are allocated for this type of reservation.
  • Only one animal is allowed per room.
  • The animal must be trained and controlled by its owner.
  • The animal must be kept on a leash whenever it leaves the room.
  • The animal cannot be left alone in the room or elsewhere on the property.
  • Guests are responsible for cleaning up their animal's waste on the property and its surroundings.
  • Any disturbance caused by barking or any other nuisance must be immediately controlled to avoid inconveniencing other guests.
  • The guest is responsible for any material and/or physical damages caused by their animal.
  • The Royal Dalhousie reserves the right to charge the guest for the amount of damages caused by their animal on the premises.
  • The guest assumes all financial and moral responsibility in the event that another guest or an employee is a victim of their animal during an incident within the establishment or on the property.
  • The guest undertakes to indemnify and release Royal Dalhousie, its owners, and its leaders from any liability for damage caused by their animal. Royal Dalhousie reserves the right to legally pursue the owner of the animal.

Non-compliance with these regulations may result in fees or expulsion from the premises, without reimbursement, at the discretion of the Royal Dalhousie.
